CASE STUDY
Smart Rooflight & Blind Automation Integration
Challenge
A luxury residential property in London needed to bring existing rooflights and blinds into one smart-home platform without replacing hardware or disrupting current operation. Before delivery, the systems were isolated, manually controlled through separate interfaces, and offered no central automation, no remote orchestration, and no scalable path for future smart-home expansion.
Solution
MPED designed and implemented an integration layer between the existing rooflight control system, Somfy RTS blinds and a central Loxone smart-home platform. The solution preserved original hardware and safety behaviour, introduced central control and automation readiness, and created a non-invasive route to modern smart-home usability without forcing a full hardware replacement.
Automation in action
Loxone rooflight and blind control demo
A short site demo showing the integrated Loxone automation flow for rooflights and blinds after the non-invasive control layer was connected to the existing installation.
System functionality
- Centralised control of all roof windows through the Loxone platform
- Centralised control of blinds grouped through Somfy RTS integration
- Manual control through the Loxone interface and logic layer
- Independent up and down control per roof window
- Group control of blinds
- Prepared foundations for timers, scenes, weather logic, and broader smart-home automation
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
- Dry-contact relay switching for control integration
- Rooflight interface built around COM, L1 and L2 control logic
- Blind control via Somfy Dry Contact RTS Transmitter
- Loxone Air wireless communication across distributed nodes
- Average full open or close cycle of roughly 20 seconds
- Distributed control nodes orchestrated through a central Loxone Miniserver
Technologies
- Loxone Air wireless automation protocol
- Relay-based dry-contact integration
- Low-voltage signal interfacing for 12V control logic
- Hybrid wired and radio system integration
- Edge device orchestration via Loxone
APPLICATIONS
- Residential smart-home automation
- Automated ventilation through roof windows
- Centralised shading control
- Integration into broader smart-home systems
- Future connection to weather, scene, and security logic
Results
- Successfully integrated previously isolated rooflight and blind systems into one smart platform
- Delivered reliable central rooflight control through Loxone
- Achieved stable and responsive blind control through RTS integration
- Completed the proof of concept in around 1 hour 15 minutes on site, following strong preparation in advance that allowed the team to connect the system quickly and demonstrate the result immediately
- Required zero modifications to original hardware
- Created a seamless end-user experience from a single control interface
Summary
This project connected previously separate rooflight and blind systems into one automation-ready smart-home platform without replacing working hardware. By combining Loxone orchestration, non-invasive control integration and preserved safety logic, MPED delivered a more usable, more valuable, and future-ready residential automation environment for a luxury London property.
